President Bola Tinubu held a late-night meeting with major stakeholders from Rivers State at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Sunday potentially easing the political crisis rocking the state since 2023.
Reports on Monday said the President met with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and other political leaders from the state.
Although the outcome was not officially disclosed, sources revealed that Governor Fubara later accompanied Wike to his residence in Guzape, Abuja.
According to insiders, Governor Fubara appealed to Wike and pledged to uphold mutual respect. This could be a significant step toward reconciliation and de-escalation of tensions between the two leaders.
The crisis has divided Rivers State politics for months, with clashes between the governor’s camp and allies of the former governor, now FCT minister.
Tinubu’s intervention is seen as an attempt to stabilize one of Nigeria’s most politically strategic states.
Rivers State is a major oil-producing region and a stronghold in national politics. Prolonged instability could affect governance and even economic activities.
The President’s involvement signals the importance of resolving disputes as the president seeks a united front as he faces his challengers to the presidential seat next year.
