A woman in Belgium accidentally swallowed a 17cm spoon after her dog startled her while she was eating yoghurt.
The woman, identified as 28-year-old Reymy Amelinckx from Rumst, said she had placed the spoon in her mouth to free her hands when her Hungarian Vizsla, Marley, suddenly jumped on her lap.
“I was so startled I jerked my head back, and before I knew it, the spoon was lodged in my throat,” she recalled.
Reymy said she tried to remove the spoon but quickly realised she had to choose between choking or swallowing. “Everything happened so fast, it was either swallow or choke,” she explained.
She admitted she initially felt too embarrassed to tell her boyfriend and pretended nothing was wrong. Later that evening, she realised the situation was serious.
Medical Intervention
Doctors told her the spoon was too large to pass naturally and scheduled a gastroscopy. Reymy described the night before the procedure as terrifying.
“I felt the spoon moving, sometimes even between my ribs. Sleeping was difficult because every position reminded me of the spoon in my stomach,” she said.
Two days later, the utensil was removed under local anaesthetic. Doctors had to rotate it inside her stomach, which caused minor bleeding. Reymy suffered a sore throat and temporary gastric sensitivity but avoided permanent damage.
Despite the ordeal, Reymy decided to keep the spoon as a memento.
“My boyfriend wants to turn it into a work of art. He doesn’t know exactly what yet, but it will definitely be a unique piece,” she said.
The bizarre accident has left her with a lifelong reputation as “that girl with the spoon.
