The Kano State Government has announced the adoption of advanced vehicle tracking technology to enhance security and curb emerging threats in the city.
The initiative, unveiled on Saturday by the Commissioner for Transportation, Barr. Haruna Isa Dederi, targets commercial vehicles and tricycles, popularly known as Adadata, as part of efforts to protect lives and property in Nigeria’s busiest northern commercial hub.
Dederi explained that despite relative peace in Kano, the rising cases of car theft and the use of tricycles to dispose of stolen valuables demanded urgent intervention.
He also expressed concern about the infiltration of bandits and criminal elements into the state.
“Government has a system where whenever anybody is coming into Kano, from the time he arrives, he will be captured. We will see through the cameras. We will see what he is up to,” Dederi said.
He added that surveillance hardware had already been mounted at major entry and exit points, strategic roads, junctions, and quarters across the state.
How the Technology Works
The commissioner explained that the hardware devices will serve as trackers, detecting the footprint of vehicles and transmitting data to relevant authorities.
“When he is going into the town, he is definitely going to use either a tricycle or a taxi. By the time he is doing that, he will definitely be noticed. And everything concerning him will be transmitted to the appropriate authorities. The police have a dashboard. The Ministry of Transportation has a dashboard. The Cabinet Office also has a dashboard. Everybody will be monitoring what is happening,” Dederi noted.
He said enforcement would begin with commercial transport operators before extending to private vehicles and tricycles.
Dr. Aminu Umar Maigari, representing the private firm handling the deployment, disclosed that vehicle and tricycle owners would pay ₦28,000 for the hardware and administrative charges before installation.
He explained that while the firm would oversee general detection and tracking, additional dashboards were being distributed to strategic quarters to carry security details.
Representatives of security agencies pledged their readiness to support the initiative, assuring enforcement to keep Kano safe.
Transport workers present at the meeting also promised to promote the programme and sustain peace and development in the state.
