LASTMA Rescues LAWMA Worker Struck by Speeding Truck in Lagos Bridge

A Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) worker narrowly escaped death after being struck by a speeding truck along Offin Canal, near Eko Bridge, Lagos, on Thursday. The timely intervention of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officers saved his life, officials confirmed.

The victim, identified as Mr. Baba Ibeji, was performing routine sanitation duties when a containerized truck lost control and struck him while descending the CMS–Eko Bridge.

Eyewitnesses said the truck also collided with a nearby vehicle before coming to a stop.

LASTMA officers on patrol immediately responded to the scene, rescuing the injured worker from beneath the truck.

A spokesperson for LASTMA said, “Our team acted swiftly to extract the worker and provide first aid before transferring him to the hospital. Quick action prevented what could have been a fatal outcome.

Mr. Ibeji was initially taken to a nearby clinic for stabilization and later transferred to the General Hospital for further medical attention.

Medical personnel confirmed that his condition is stable and that he is receiving specialist care for fractures and injuries sustained from the impact.

Authorities reported that the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the crash. However, LASTMA apprehended the driver’s assistant, who is now in police custody pending further investigation.

The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has ordered a thorough probe into the incident to determine culpability and enforce sanctions in accordance with traffic laws.

The Special Adviser on Transportation condemned the reckless driving that endangered lives.

He said, “Incidents like this remind us of the importance of strict adherence to traffic regulations. We will ensure those responsible are held accountable to prevent such accidents in the future.”
