The massacre of more than 160 people in Woro and Nuku communities of Kwara State has left many Nigerians in shock, and drawn widespread condemnation, with political leaders calling for urgent action to restore peace and justice.
On Wednesday, gunmen stormed villages in Kaiama Local Government Area, killing at least 162 residents in what has been described as Nigeria’s deadliest attack of 2026 so far.
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi expressed deep sorrow over the killings. In a statement on his 𝕏 handle titled “Killings in Kwara: We Must Act Now”, Obi described the incident as a national failure.
“I am deeply saddened by the recent attacks in Kwara State, where gunmen reportedly killed about 150 people in villages including Woro and Nuku. Every loss of innocent life is tragic, and these killings represent a major failure for us as a nation,” Obi wrote.
He extended condolences to bereaved families and urged authorities to act swiftly.
“These recurring acts of violence across our country – now worse than what occurs in some countries at war – underscore the urgent need for us, as a nation, to declare war on insecurity of lives and property and to deploy every possible means to end this scourge,” he added.
Femi Fani-Kayode’s Response
Former Minister of Aviation and Ambassador-designate Femi Fani-Kayode also condemned the killings, describing the attackers as “bloodthirsty barbarians from a foreign land.”
In his post on Thursday, Fani-Kayode said the killers were targeting both Christians and Muslims, stressing that the violence was not rooted in faith but in barbarism.
“The massacre of over 160 innocent Nigerians in Kaiama LGA Kwara State is shocking and condemnable. My heart goes out to Governor Rahman Abdul Razaq and the people of Kwara,” he wrote.
He commended President Bola Tinubu for ordering the swift deployment of troops to the area and called for a permanent military base in Kwara to curb future attacks.
“This is an attack on our fatherland and our people, and we must all rise up, join our hands together, support both the state and Federal Government and collectively resist it. May the souls of those that were brutally murdered rest in peace,” Fani-Kayode added.
The massacre appear to lead many to now justify the threat of US President Donald Trump to invade Nigeria “guns-ablazing to wipe out the terrorists” targeting Christians in Nigeria.
President Bola Tinubu had since deployed additional military forces to the region of the violence.
