President Bola Tinubu has once again stepped in to halt the escalating feud between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is also his estranged political godfather.
The crisis deepened in January when lawmakers loyal to Wike in the Rivers State House of Assembly began impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara.
They accused him of misconduct, including spending unbudgeted funds from the state treasury.
According to ThisDay, Tinubu had earlier brokered a fragile peace in December 2023, but the truce collapsed, leading to his declaration of a six-month emergency rule in Rivers State on March 18, 2025, and the suspension of the governor.
In his latest move, Tinubu ordered an immediate suspension of impeachment proceedings against Fubara.
Multiple sources suggest that the president acted just before departing for an official trip to Türkiye on January 26. He laid down strict political terms aimed at restoring peace between the two leaders.
Conditions for Peace
Reports indicate that Tinubu delivered a blunt message to Governor Fubara, insisting that Wike remains the undisputed political leader in Rivers State, whether in the APC or PDP, and must be respected.
The president also warned that continued hostilities would undermine governance and destabilize the state, a situation he said he would not tolerate.
Tinubu was equally firm with Wike, telling him to back off any impeachment plots and allow governance to continue in Rivers State.
Rivers State is considered critical to Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. Analysts say the president’s repeated interventions underscore the importance of stabilizing the oil-rich state, which has long been a battleground for political influence.
