NLC, TUC Suspend Protest After Truce Reached with FCT Minister Wike

Organised labour and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, have reached a truce over the dispute that disrupted activities in Abuja in recent days.

The breakthrough came after a marathon meeting convened by Senator Mohammed Bomoi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on FCT. The session, which began just before midnight and ended at 3:50am on Tuesday, initially saw heated exchanges but eventually calmed under Bomoi’s mediation.

In attendance were Wike, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero, Trade Union Congress (TUC) President Festus Osifo, their general secretaries, and other stakeholders.

Briefing journalists afterwards, Acting General Secretary of the NLC, Benson Upah, announced that no worker would be victimised for participating in the strike. He said all outstanding cases at the National Industrial Court would be withdrawn immediately.

“All complaints presented by JUAC members were taken one after the other and fully addressed. The Honourable Minister assured organised labour of mutual respect and sustained engagement going forward,” Upah stated.

He directed all workers in the FCT to resume duties immediately, stressing that affiliates of both the NLC and TUC must comply in the interest of industrial peace.

Organised labour had earlier vowed to proceed with a massive protest to press home demands of FCTA workers. Police authorities cautioned against the action, citing safety concerns, while Wike obtained an interim court order restraining the unions.

The conciliatory meeting effectively ended the standoff, restoring calm to the capital.
