The Imo State Police Command has announced the arrest of 25 suspects linked to kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, drug peddling, child trafficking, and other crimes, in a renewed crackdown on criminal networks across the state.
In a statement, Police Spokesperson Henry Okoye said operatives recovered four assault rifles, 25 cartridges, two vehicles, three motorcycles, and 35 bags of cannabis sativa. Other items included suspected stolen aluminum roofing sheets and incriminating exhibits.
Among those arrested were suspected gang members terrorising Njaba LGA. The suspects—Eririogu Chukwuebuka (28), Ezemonye Orji (32), and Kelechi Michael (28)—were allegedly responsible for the 2021 murders of two traditional rulers, HRH Eze Durueburuo of Okwudo Autonomous Community and HRH Eze Sampson Osunwa of Ihebinowere Autonomous Community.
Recovered from them were one AK-47 rifle, three magazines, 30 rounds of live ammunition, one pump-action gun, seven cartridges, and criminal charms.
Drug Interception and Camp Dismantling
Okoye disclosed that operatives intercepted a Ford J5 bus in Oguta LGA, arresting two suspected drug peddlers with a consignment of illicit substances. About 1,200kg of cannabis sativa and other prohibited drugs were seized.
In another operation, police arrested Ezeh Chinonso Ugochukwu (31), a notorious gang leader on the Command’s wanted list.
His confession led to the dismantling of a camp suspected to belong to the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Orsu Obodo, where one AK-47 rifle, one LAR rifle, one pump-action gun, and 22 rounds of live ammunition were recovered.
The suspect also confessed to murders carried out by his syndicate, including the killing of a pastor and a pregnant woman.
Okoye said all suspects and exhibits are in custody and will be charged to court. He added that Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma, recently promoted, has reassured residents of the Command’s resolve to crush criminal networks and ensure public safety.
