The Federal Government has inaugurated the National Economic Council (NEC) Technical Sub-Committee on Livestock Development, reaffirming its commitment to repositioning the livestock sector as a key driver of economic growth, food security, and national cohesion.
The inauguration took place in Abuja, with the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu, presiding.
He explained that the sub-committee was established to harmonise existing policy frameworks and fast-track the development of an actionable roadmap for consideration by the NEC.
Bagudu noted that President Bola Tinubu’s active engagement with the NEC reflects Nigeria’s federal constitutional structure, which assigns responsibility for agriculture and food security—including livestock development—to federal, state, and local councils.
He urged state commissioners to take ownership of the process, stressing that widespread acceptance of the committee’s recommendations would help mobilise resources from states and local authorities, while also attracting development partners.
Universities to Receive Agricultural Funding
In a related development, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Abayomi Fasina, disclosed that the Federal Government is implementing a major initiative to boost agricultural production by providing special funding to federal universities.
Several institutions, including FUOYE, have received ₦1 billion each for agriculture, infrastructure, and production.
Fasina explained that the initiative is designed to enable universities to feed their students and surrounding communities.
He revealed that some academic staff had secured grants exceeding ₦430 million, while he personally attracted more than $55,000 in funding programmes to the university.
The VC also announced that FUOYE had successfully executed over 160 infrastructural projects across its campuses.
He added that former vice chancellors of the university—Profs Chinedu Nebo, Isaac Asuzu, and Kayode Soremekun—would be honoured with emeritus professor titles in recognition of their contributions to the institution.
