Kukah Warns Over Persistent Killings, Says Violence in Nigeria “Unmatched”

Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto has issued a stark warning over Nigeria’s persistent killings, describing the situation as unparalleled anywhere in the world.

Speaking in Yola, Adamawa State, at the launch of “The Man They Could Not Stop”—a book on Governor Ahmadu Fintiri authored by Solomon Kumangar—Kukah lamented Nigeria’s worsening religious divisions and how violence is often framed in Western media.

“What is happening in Nigeria cannot happen in Sudan, Cameroon, Niger, Ghana, or any other country,” he said. “Only in Nigeria do people die as Christians and Muslims.”

Kukah urged political and religious leaders to focus on building institutions that unite Nigerians, stressing that peace is essential for development.

He commended former INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, for his role in resolving the 2023 Adamawa governorship crisis, describing it as an example of leadership that prioritizes stability.

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki also addressed the gathering, urging Nigerians to prioritize competence and leadership capacity over party loyalty. He cited Governor Fintiri’s infrastructural record as proof of preparedness for leadership.

Chairman of the ceremony, Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, openly invited Fintiri to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reflecting on the 2023 elections, Fintiri described himself as a “man of destiny” who survived intense political resistance through the support of the Adamawa people.

The high-profile book launch drew governors, deputy governors, and party leaders from across Nigeria, underscoring its national importance.
