A United States–based advocacy organization, Ambassadors for Self Determination USA, has criticized political leaders from Nigeria’s South-East for what it described as weak and uncoordinated advocacy regarding the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a statement issued from Washington, D.C., the group reacted to recent remarks attributed to Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, who referenced the federal government’s position on separatist agitations.
The organization said the comments reflected Abuja’s firm stance against Biafra-related demands and a broader unwillingness to revisit the issue.
“Statements from senior government officials continue to show that there is little inclination at the center to reconsider its approach,” the group noted, adding that South-East leaders have failed to demonstrate a collective strategy capable of influencing the situation.
Lack of Unified Advocacy
Ambassadors for Self Determination USA argued that the absence of a unified political position among elected officials in the region has weakened advocacy efforts and reduced international attention on Kanu’s case.
“When those elected to represent the region fail to speak with one voice, it becomes difficult to generate the level of pressure required for meaningful dialogue,” the group stated.
The organization also pointed to broader governance challenges in the South-East, including economic disruptions and recurring tensions linked to protests and enforcement measures.
It stressed that decisions affecting daily economic life should be handled through inclusive dialogue to avoid further strain between authorities and residents.
“Policies imposed without broad public engagement risk deepening mistrust and prolonging instability,” the statement added.
Call for Peaceful Engagement
Looking ahead, the group urged residents of the South-East to remain committed to peaceful and lawful civic engagement, particularly as Nigeria approaches future elections.
It encouraged voters to assess leadership performance and accountability, noting that “sustainable political progress depends on unity, transparency, and consistent advocacy.”
The organization concluded by reaffirming its support for non-violent efforts to address long-standing political grievances and called for renewed dialogue focused on justice, inclusion, and respect for the rights of affected communities.
