Police Arrest Six Over ₦7.7bn Telecom Airtime Cyberattack Syndicate

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has arrested six suspects accused of carrying out a massive cyberattack on a leading telecommunications company, diverting airtime and mobile data worth ₦7.7 billion.

The arrests were confirmed in a statement on Wednesday by Benjamin Hundeyin, Force Public Relations Officer.

He explained that the suspects gained unlawful access to the company’s core systems after compromising internal staff login credentials.

Those arrested are Ahmad Bala, Karibu Mohammed Shehu, Umar Habib, Obinna Ananaba, Ibrahim Shehu, and Masa’ud Sa’ad.

Hundeyin said the syndicate manipulated the company’s billing and payment infrastructure, causing significant financial losses. The operation was triggered by a formal petition from the affected telecom firm, which reported suspicious and unauthorised activities within its systems.

Recovered items during the arrest include two residential houses in Kano, two mini-plazas, GSM and laptop retail outlets containing over 400 laptops, 1,000 mobile as well as a Toyota RAV4 vehicle

Police operatives recovered two mini plazas used as retail outlets, more than 400 laptops, about 1,000 mobile phones, and a Toyota vehicle.

Investigators also traced a substantial sum of money linked to the fraud to the suspects’ bank accounts.

According to the police, coordinated enforcement actions began in October 2025 across Kano and Katsina States, with additional arrests later made in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The suspects are expected to face charges in court once investigations are concluded.

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun commended the officers involved, praising their professionalism and commitment to tackling cybercrime.
