A mysterious overnight attack shook Air Base 101 in Niamey, capital of Niger Republic, raising fears of internal mutiny within the military and fresh concerns about stability under the junta led by Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani.
Security sources reported that multiple explosions were heard around midnight on Wednesday at the strategic base, which sits near Diori Hamani International Airport.
The attack reportedly damaged or disabled several military aerial assets, including drones and fixed‑wing aircraft, and severely disrupted the Unified Force Command Centre.
Four civilian aircraft parked on the tarmac were also affected, including one belonging to ASKY Airlines, though no passengers were onboard.
Two trucks transporting uranium materials within the base perimeter were hit, but the cargo remained intact, averting what could have been a major environmental and security crisis.
Ambulances were seen moving in and out of the base throughout the night. Some attackers were killed, while others were arrested and taken into custody by Niger’s intelligence services.
Insider Suspicions
The identity of those behind the assault remains unclear. While initial speculation pointed to jihadist involvement, no armed group has claimed responsibility.
Other security sources suggested the nature of the operation indicated insider involvement.
“The pattern of the attack and access to sensitive areas strongly indicate insider involvement,” a regional security analyst said.
The incident has heightened fears that Gen. Tchiani may be losing control over key institutions, particularly the military, with potentially serious implications for Niger’s internal stability.
Niger plays a critical role in Sahel security, and analysts warn that any breakdown in military command could worsen insecurity in neighbouring countries, including Nigeria, which already struggles with terrorism and banditry.
As of press time, Niger’s authorities had not issued an official statement on the incident.
