Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, a move that has stirred fresh political debate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This is similar to the recent entrant into the ruling party, by the son of Obasanjo’s former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, Mr Abba Abubakar. Mr registered as a member on January 15, picking up his membership card at Gwadabwa Ward in Yola North Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
Iyabo, a former senator representing Ogun Central reportedly completed her e-registration on Tuesday at Ibogun, Ward 11, Ifo Local Government Area.
Confirming the development, Biodun Ajayi, a close ally of Prof. Obasanjo and former Chairman of Abeokuta South Local Government, said the registration was successfully concluded.
Ajayi, now a commissioner with the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), described the move as a personal decision.
“I can confirm that Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo completed her online registration as a member of our great party, the APC, on Tuesday at Ibogun Ward 11 in Ifo Local Government,” he said.
Public Interest and Party Reaction
The Ogun State APC Director of Publicity, Femi Nuberu, declined to directly confirm or deny her registration but acknowledged the heightened public interest surrounding the ongoing membership exercise.
He stressed that the process remains open, free, and accessible to all eligible Nigerians.
“The APC registration process is open to every Nigerian citizen aged 18 and above, in line with our party’s constitution,” Nuberu said, adding that all registrations are authenticated at the ward level.
Another source, a former member of the House of Representatives from the area, also confirmed the development anonymously, saying Prof. Obasanjo registered at Ibogun on Tuesday.
Her decision has surprised many observers who speculated she might return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speculation intensified late last year after campaign-style billboards bearing her image appeared across Abeokuta.
Independence and Speculation
The move is notable given her father’s public support for Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi during the 2023 elections. However, a source close to Prof. Obasanjo said the decision reflects her independence.
“She has her own mind, regardless of her father’s political position,” the source said.
Currently serving as an Associate Professor of Public Health at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Prof. Obasanjo has downplayed rumours of an immediate return to active politics.
Speaking recently, she said she was not planning to contest any office in 2027, noting that the billboards were erected by supporters in appreciation of her past service.
Despite her remarks, the development has left many speculating about her possible 2027 senatorial contest in Ogun Central, given her political pedigree and renewed grassroots engagement.
