As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, political parties are intensifying membership registration drives to project grassroots popularity and strengthen their chances at the polls.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reported Lagos State as the frontrunner in its ongoing e-registration exercise. The digital membership drive, launched in December 2025 and scheduled to end on January 31, 2026, was designed to register party members nationwide.
Lagos began registration on January 5, 2026, and within 15 days overtook Delta State, which had led the process for nearly three months.
State Coordinator Comrade Prince Ayodele Adewale attributed the success to effective planning, collaboration with local government stakeholders, and strategic use of technology.
He expressed appreciation to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, and other state leaders for their support.
Allegations of Exclusion in Zamfara
Meanwhile, Hon. Sani Jaji, a member of the House of Representatives for Kaura-Namoda/Birnin Magaji Federal Constituency in Zamfara State, alleged that some APC members were being denied registration.
Speaking after meeting National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, Jaji claimed that members of the Jajiyya movement in Zamfara were excluded from the process. He also said he himself had not been registered despite his role in the 2023 presidential campaign.
“They shortchanged the State Organising Secretary from participating in the process and some of the people that belong to the Jajiyya movement in the state were denied having their membership registration,” Jaji said.
He warned that similar exclusionary practices contributed to the collapse of the PDP in 2015 and urged party leadership to address the issue.
ADC Records One Million Members in Katsina
In Katsina State, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) announced that it has registered more than one million members, marking a significant boost for the opposition party.
The party’s 2023 governorship candidate, Ibrahim Aminu-Trader, disclosed the figures during a stakeholders’ meeting. He said the registration cut across all 34 local government areas and attracted youths, women, and defectors from other parties.
“So far, we have recorded over one million registrations, and our membership cards have finished,” Aminu-Trader said, adding that efforts were underway to secure more cards.
He projected that the ADC could register between three and four million members before the 2027 elections, describing the surge as evidence of growing demand for change.
Aminu-Trader, who is eyeing the party’s governorship ticket, pledged to focus on tackling insecurity, poverty, unemployment, and economic challenges. He urged members to remain law-abiding and committed to peaceful democratic processes.
