The National Judicial Council (NJC) has confirmed receipt of a petition relating to the restriction of the Enugu Economic Survival Summit, which had been scheduled to hold in Lagos on September 30, 2025.
In a letter dated January 16, 2026, signed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) and NJC Chairman, Justice Kudirat M. O. Kekere-Ekun, the council acknowledged receipt of the petition submitted on December 9, 2025, by Comrade Kennedy Iyere, convener of the Youths Off The Street Initiative (YOTSI).
The NJC stated that the matter was receiving due consideration, reaffirming its institutional role in reviewing complaints brought before it.
Iyere’s petition raised concerns over the restriction of the summit by the Enugu State Government.
Reacting to the NJC’s acknowledgement, he expressed appreciation for the expedited response, describing it as a reflection of the judiciary’s independence and commitment to due process.
“This process is about engaging the relevant institutions and allowing them to carry out their constitutional responsibilities,” Iyere said, adding that his organisation remains committed to lawful advocacy and constructive engagement.
Civil Society Protest
A coalition of civil society organisations under the banner of the 40Million Ballots Movement (40MB) has announced plans to hold a peaceful protest over the cancellation of the summit.

The protest is being coordinated by 40MB in collaboration with CISCAES and the Hope for Our Generation Economic Empowerment Coalition (HOGEEC).
The coalition referenced a court order obtained on November 28, 2025, at the High Court of Enugu State, which disrupted plans to convene the summit at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. Organisers said the order resulted in financial and logistical losses.
Following consultations with legal practitioners, they resolved to seek clarification and redress through lawful and civic means.
The coalition described the protest as a pro-democracy civil society action aimed at highlighting issues of due process, judicial integrity and protection of civic rights.
They emphasised that the action would be peaceful and intended to strengthen confidence in institutions while promoting adherence to democratic values.
