The Federal Government has restated its determination to conduct a credible, transparent, and internationally acceptable national census, stressing that due process will not be sacrificed for speed.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, gave the assurance on Tuesday when the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr. Aminu Yusuf, led a management team on a courtesy visit to his office.
Idris emphasised that accurate population data is critical to national planning and development, noting that reliable demographic figures are indispensable for effective governance.
“I want to reaffirm the commitment of the Federal Government led by President Bola Tinubu to delivering a credible, transparent, and internationally acceptable national census, anchored on effective public communication and inter-agency collaboration,” Idris said.
He pledged that his ministry and its agencies would mobilize Nigerians and drive nationwide advocacy once the President proclaims a census date.
Role of Government Agencies
Idris explained that agencies such as the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Voice of Nigeria (VON), and the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) would be deployed for sensitization campaigns across the country.
He stressed that a presidential proclamation remained the legal basis for conducting the census, assuring that all requirements were being aligned to meet global standards.
The minister urged the NPC to continue leveraging government-owned media platforms for sustained public enlightenment, highlighting the importance of consistent communication in building public trust.
NPC’s Readiness
Earlier, NPC Chairman Dr. Aminu Yusuf commended the ministry for its support in public mobilization ahead of the previously postponed census.
Yusuf said the commission remained operationally ready, with systems, logistics, ICT infrastructure, and personnel being continuously refined to ensure efficiency and transparency once a new date is announced.
He emphasized that public trust is central to effective population management in Nigeria, calling for sustained access to government media platforms to deepen citizens’ understanding of census participation and civil registration.
The national census is expected to provide critical data for planning in areas such as healthcare, education, housing, infrastructure, and social services.
Nigeria’s last census was conducted in 2006, making updated figures essential for policy formulation and resource allocation.
By reiterating its commitment, the Federal Government seeks to assure both Nigerians and international partners that the forthcoming census will meet global standards of credibility and transparency.
