The administration of US President Donald Trump has unveiled plans for a new international body called the “Board of Peace”, according to a draft charter seen by AFP. The proposal includes charging countries $1 billion for permanent membership.
The draft framework states that countries would normally hold membership for a maximum of three years, represented by their heads of state.
However, nations contributing more than $1 billion in cash during the board’s first year would be exempt from the term limit and could retain their seats indefinitely.
President Trump would chair the board, which has reportedly extended invitations to several world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Trump has also named US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, senior envoy Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law Jared Kushner as members.
Mandate Beyond Gaza
Although the board was initially conceived to oversee the reconstruction of Gaza, the charter outlines a broader role focused on conflict resolution and post-war governance.
The structure would include:
- A central board chaired by Trump.
- A Palestinian-led technocratic committee to administer Gaza.
- A separate executive board with advisory functions.
The charter describes the organisation as an international body intended to promote stability, re-establish lawful governance, and secure long-term peace in regions affected by or vulnerable to conflict.
Germany’s Response
Germany confirmed it had received an invitation to join the Board of Peace. Government spokesman Stefan Cornelius said: “The US has invited Germany, among other countries, to participate in building an international Board of Peace. We are grateful for this invitation. We share the goal of serving peace in the world. We particularly want to help permanently resolve the Gaza conflict.”
Cornelius declined to give a definitive answer on whether Germany would participate if Russia were included.
“Germany’s core interest is to permanently resolve the Gaza conflict. That’s the ambition we share. We will examine other aspects and remain in close contact with our partners regarding this,” he said.
The White House announced that the Board of Peace will play a central role in fulfilling Trump’s 20-point plan to end the Gaza conflict, aiming to bring lasting peace, stability, and prosperity to the region.
