The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has reached an agreement with the institution’s Student Union Government (SUG) to reduce the initially proposed 100% increase in sundry charges for the 2025/2026 academic session to 60%, representing a 40% reduction from the Council’s earlier plan.
The decision follows weeks of dialogue and negotiation between the university management and student union representatives across all campuses.
The initial proposal of a 100% hike had sparked widespread opposition from students, parents, and stakeholders, with threats of protest demanding immediate reversal.
The Agreement
In a press statement issued on Saturday, Acting Public Relations Officer Inya Agha Egwu confirmed that management, acting on behalf of the Governing Council, consented to the students’ request.
- Both new and returning students will now pay 60% more in sundry charges for the 2025/2026 session.
- A detailed schedule of revised charges, broken down by faculty and level, will be released soon.
- Payment will be allowed in two instalments across semesters to ease financial pressure.
- Accommodation fees will remain unchanged for the session.
The agreement was formally signed on Friday after a meeting between university officials and SUG leaders, including presidents of the Nsukka and Enugu campuses, legislative speakers, and the SUG Senate President.
Negotiation Process
Talks began in December 2025, with students initially proposing a 30% increase. They later adjusted their stance, citing comparable fees in other universities and the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades.
The Council had earlier shifted its position from 100% to 90% before finally agreeing to the 60% compromise.
The SUG leadership expressed appreciation to the Governing Council for its responsiveness and urged students to remain calm, law-abiding, and compliant with the new terms.
They also warned against external interference or incitement to violence under the guise of student advocacy.
The university reiterated its commitment to dialogue, student welfare, and institutional development in the collective interest of all stakeholders.
