The Ethnic Youth Leaders Council has issued a stern warning to vested interests allegedly working to derail Nigeria’s newly implemented tax laws, which came into effect on January 1, 2026.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Council reaffirmed its “unwavering commitment to the successful implementation of the new tax law” and vowed to resist any plot aimed at undermining the reform process.
Signed by national coordinator Mallam Kabiru Yusuf, the statement described the new tax regime as a critical component of Nigeria’s economic recovery and fiscal sustainability agenda.
“We are aware of subtle and overt moves by vested interests who have benefited from the inefficient system and are uncomfortable with reforms that promote transparency, accountability, and shared responsibility,” Yusuf said.
The Council commended the Federal Government’s resolve in driving the reforms and urged Nigerians to exercise patience as implementation progresses. It also called on security agencies to remain alert and protect lawful processes from disruption.
Ethnic Groups Endorse Reforms
Furthermore, representatives of Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo and Arewa socio-cultural groups also voiced support for the new tax laws, stressing that the policy will reduce government dependence on borrowing and enhance revenue for infrastructure and social services.
In a joint statement, they described the smooth rollout of the tax framework as a milestone in Nigeria’s economic reform journey, reflecting effective planning, stakeholder engagement, and strong political will.
Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo said the reforms underscore President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to fiscal discipline and sustainable growth.
The Arewa groups commended Tinubu’s leadership and praised the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) under Executive Chairman Zacch Adedeji for ensuring a hitch-free commencement despite initial concerns and legal challenges.
They also lauded the judiciary for providing clarity through its rulings, which paved the way for timely implementation.
Both the Council and ethnic groups urged Nigerians to support the reforms, stressing that constructive engagement, not sabotage, is the appropriate path for addressing concerns.
They reiterated readiness to mobilise and sensitise stakeholders nationwide, affirming that Nigeria’s economic transformation requires collective sacrifice and inclusiveness to build public confidence.
