North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has pledged to “unconditionally support” all policies and decisions of Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Pyongyang’s state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
The declaration comes as South Korean and Western intelligence agencies report that North Korea has dispatched thousands of troops to fight alongside Russian forces in Ukraine, nearly four years into Moscow’s invasion.
In a letter shared Friday by KCNA, Kim described his ties with Putin as “the most precious ones,” adding that he felt “true comradely relations” from the Russian leader.
“I will unconditionally respect and unconditionally support all your policies and decisions and I have a willingness to be always with you for the sake of you and your Russia. This choice will be constant and permanent,” Kim wrote.
He also pledged that “close cooperation” between the two countries would continue across various spheres in the future.
The note was reportedly in response to a letter from Putin, though its contents were not disclosed.
Messages of “Invincible Friendship”
The two leaders exchanged New Year messages, with Kim saying North Korea and Russia had shared “blood, life and death” in the Ukraine war.
Putin, for his part, hailed the “invincible friendship” between Moscow and Pyongyang.
Pyongyang has stepped up missile testing in recent years to improve precision strike capabilities, challenge the United States and South Korea, and test weapons before exporting them to Russia.
In addition to sending troops, North Korea has supplied Russia with artillery shells, missiles, and long-range rocket systems.
In return, Russia is reportedly providing North Korea with financial aid, military technology, food, and energy supplies.
