Three farmers have been killed in Igboho, Orelope Local Government Area of Oyo State, following a violent clash with suspected herders accused of destroying farmlands.
The victims — Aderoju Mukaila, Olawuwo Saka, and Ojeniyi Ojebayo — reportedly sustained machete wounds during the confrontation and later died in hospital.
The incident has reignited concerns about rural insecurity in the Oke-Ogun axis, where communities have long complained of unchecked attacks linked to grazing disputes.
Reacting to the killings, Yoruba Nation activist Chief Sunday Adeyemo (Sunday Igboho) urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene decisively.
He warned that continued government inaction could push frustrated residents toward self-help measures, escalating tensions in the South West.
“Our people are being attacked daily while perpetrators walk free. If this continues, communities will be forced to defend themselves, and that could lead to avoidable unrest,” Igboho said in a statement.
He accused “rogue herders and bandits” of exploiting weak security presence in rural settlements and forests across Oyo, Kwara, and Kogi states.
The Oke-Ogun region has been a flashpoint in Nigeria’s wider farmer-herder crisis, which has strained relations between agrarian communities and pastoral groups.
The disputes over land use, crop destruction, and cattle grazing have repeatedly led to violent clashes, with rural dwellers often left vulnerable due to limited policing.
Igboho is calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible, alongside preventive measures to protect farmers and restore confidence in state institutions.
The killings add to mounting pressure on the Federal Government to deliver on promises of rural security and agricultural protection.
For residents of Igboho and surrounding communities, the tragedy is another reminder of the precarious balance between livelihood and survival in Nigeria’s volatile rural belt.
