The Federal Government has raised alarm over alleged attempts to sabotage the implementation of Nigeria’s newly signed tax reforms, citing deliberate misinformation campaigns aimed at eroding public trust.
The concern was voiced in Abuja during the inauguration of a Joint Committee comprising the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms.
The committee is tasked with aligning public communication and safeguarding the reform agenda.
Special Adviser to the President on Economic Affairs, Tope Fasua, accused unnamed individuals of pushing false narratives to stall implementation. He stressed that the new tax framework was designed to protect low‑income earners while strengthening national revenue.
“This is a pro‑poor policy… recalibrating the revenues of this country to ensure the poorest Nigerians are not touched, except positively,” Fasua said.
Committee to Counter Misinformation as Debate Grows
The newly inaugurated committee will engage citizens, clarify concerns, and counter misleading claims about the reforms.
Authorities say the initiative is vital to ensure Nigerians understand the real intent of the laws, which aim to rebalance the tax system for economic stability and social fairness.
The development comes amid political debate. Abdulsamman Dasuki, a member of the House of Representatives, recently alleged discrepancies between the versions of tax bills passed by the National Assembly and those later gazetted.
Lawmakers have since pledged to investigate and uphold legislative integrity.
The new tax laws, signed by President Bola Tinubu in June 2025, are scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2026.
Government officials say the timeline allows for proper sensitisation, agency alignment, and smooth transition for businesses and citizens.
The reforms form part of Tinubu’s main economic agenda to boost revenue and reduce fiscal pressure.
