Bafarawa ‘Akida Movement’ Defects from PDP to APC in Sokoto

Supporters of former Sokoto State Governor Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, under the banner of the Bafarawa Akida Movement, have formally defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection was concluded on Wednesday after a consultative meeting of elders and leaders drawn from all 23 local government areas of the state.

Speaking to journalists, the movement’s chairman, Prof. Hamza Maishanu, said the decision was reached collectively and unanimously.

Maishanu explained that the group had operated within the PDP but withdrew due to unresolved internal challenges that weakened cohesion.

Despite leaving the PDP, members retained their political structures at ward, local government, and state levels.

The group later adopted the name “Bafarawa Akida”—a Hausa expression denoting followers of Bafarawa’s political ideology—reflecting unity, loyalty, and commitment to his leadership principles.

Alignment with APC and Support for Governor Aliyu

Maishanu said the movement’s guiding values include justice, honesty, transparency, and people‑centred governance, which he noted were evident during Bafarawa’s tenure as governor.

He added that recent political developments in Sokoto State prompted concerns about the group’s future direction, leading to broad consultations among elders.

According to him, elders from all 23 LGAs agreed to support the administration of Governor Ahmed Aliyu, citing his performance and his relationship with Bafarawa as an elder statesman.

The decision culminated in the movement’s formal alignment with the APC.

Maishanu stressed that members would now work with the party and the state government to support development initiatives across Sokoto State, reinforcing their commitment to stability and progress.
