Peter Obi Demands Probe into Alleged Arms Supplies to Bandits

Presidential hopeful and former Anambra State governor, Mr. Peter Obi, has condemned allegations that government officials supplied arms and ammunition to bandits and kidnappers, insisting that the matter requires β€œan immediate, transparent, and independent investigation.”

Obi made the call in a statement on Sunday, reacting to a viral video in which suspected terrorists claimed during interrogation that their weapons and logistics were provided by government officials.

Obi described the video as disturbing, warning that it reinforces the late General Sani Abacha’s famous remark: β€œAny insurgency that lasts more than 24 hours, the government is involved.”

He added: β€œOver the years, trillions of naira and billions of dollars have been continuously collected by the government in the name of security. Yet insecurity has only expanded across the country, and in an increasingly brazen manner.”

Citing former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Obi noted that Nigeria has the technology to track criminals but is failing to use it. β€œWhy are we negotiating with terrorists?” he asked.

Obi recalled that between 2010 and 2015, Nigeria built one of its most advanced police communication and tracking infrastructures under President Goodluck Jonathan.

β€œWhere are these pieces of equipment, and why are they not being used? Why do terrorists’ confessions so often implicate government officials?” he queried.

He also criticised the government’s handling of the recent St. Mary’s Catholic School attack, where about 100 children were released but more than 200 remain in captivity. β€œNo terrorist was arrested, no punishment announced, and no clear update has been given,” Obi said.

Meanwhile, the Kwara State government has debunked reports that the suspects in the viral video were arrested in the state, clarifying that the incident occurred in Edo State.
