FDA Investigates Deaths Potentially Linked to COVID‑19 Vaccines

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched a wide‑ranging investigation into deaths that may be linked to COVID‑19 vaccines, a spokesperson for Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. confirmed late Tuesday, December 9.

The probe follows President Donald Trump’s appointment of Kennedy as health secretary, a move that has triggered sweeping changes in vaccine policy and raised concerns within the medical community.

Andrew Nixon, spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services, told AFP: “FDA is doing a thorough investigation, across multiple age groups, of deaths potentially related to COVID vaccines.”

Reports by Bloomberg and The Washington Post had earlier disclosed the existence of the review.

The investigation was initially expected to focus on child deaths but became highly controversial after an internal FDA memo leaked in late November.

The document, attributed to a senior FDA official, claimed COVID vaccines were linked to at least 10 infant deaths, though it provided no supporting evidence.

Global Health Position

Health authorities worldwide have consistently stated that COVID‑19 vaccines are safe and effective, with extensive studies documenting their benefits.

While rare severe side effects have been recorded, experts maintain that these risks do not outweigh the overall protection vaccines provide across age groups.

Nixon declined to provide details on the methods, data, or timeline for the investigation’s conclusions.

Meanwhile, experts have raised concerns about the FDA’s direction under Kennedy, who has a long history of spreading vaccine‑related misinformation and conspiracy theories.

In 2023, Kennedy described vaccines as deadly and, without evidence, alleged that COVID‑19 was ethnically “targeted” to harm Black and White populations while sparing Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese people.

The investigation underscores the tension between global scientific consensus on vaccine safety and the Trump administration’s new health leadership.

Some have expressed the fear that the probe could fuel further controversy in an already polarized public health situation.
