First Lady Senator Remi Tinubu engaged in a brief but dramatic confrontation with Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke on Sunday during the 10th coronation anniversary of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, in Ile‑Ife.
The occasion also saw her conferred with the chieftaincy title of Yeye‑Asiwaju of Ile Oodua.
The event drew a glittering audience — former President Olusegun Obasanjo, serving and past governors, senators, and traditional rulers.
Governor Adeleke, known for his flamboyant style, danced briefly before breaking into song while delivering his remarks. At that moment, the First Lady approached him and said: “I’m giving you five minutes to finish your speech. The music is enough.”
When Adeleke continued singing, she returned and warned: “I will turn off the microphone. Stop the music.”
Videos of the exchange quickly went viral, sparking heated debate online.
Political Undercurrents
The incident comes amid intensifying politics in Osun State. Governor Adeleke recently resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), citing internal crises.
In a letter dated November 4, 2025, he informed his ward chairman of his decision.
On December 2, Adedamola Adebayo emerged as the PDP’s candidate for the 2026 governorship election, leaving Adeleke searching for a new platform to contest a second term.
After receiving her title, Senator Tinubu declared that Nigeria was on the cusp of prosperity.
“By 2026, Nigeria will be in prosperity. Other countries will come and borrow money from us. Those wondering how we will do it, we will show them,” she said, promising that the Tinubu administration would exceed expectations.
She thanked the Ooni for the honour, noting that the recognition brought her back into the social spotlight. “My last major public event was my 50th birthday celebration. This title brings me back into the fold,” she added.
The confrontation may have been brief, but it didn’t go down well with some political observers.
Writing under the caption, “WHY YOU CAN’T BLAME MRS OLUREMI TINUBU”, social critic and politician, Dele Momodu berated the first lady for bring her uncouth behaviour into the public space, asking if she would have in like manner dared a northern governor in his own domain.
