President Bola Tinubu has postponed his scheduled trip to the G‑20 Leaders’ Summit, choosing instead to remain in Nigeria to receive detailed briefings on the worsening security crises across the country.
The President has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent him at the summit, while he focuses on urgent domestic matters.
Shettima is currently in Kebbi as head of the president’s delegation to access the situation there after 25 school children were abducted on Tuesday, including other attacks in Eruku town of Kwara State.
Tinubu had been scheduled to depart Abuja today for the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit in South Africa, before proceeding to Angola for the 7th AU–EU Summit. However, the recent security breaches prompted him to suspend his departure.
The President, taking different route this time after criticisms in the past of global trotting while the home front burnt with terror, this time said the safety of Nigerians must come before international engagements.
“I have asked the Vice President to stand in for me at the G‑20. My duty now is to be fully briefed on the tragic incidents in Kebbi, Eruku, and other theatres of insecurity,” he explained.
The President has already received updates from military chiefs and directed security agencies to intensify rescue operations. He also expressed condolences to families of victims and praised the sacrifices of soldiers who lost their lives in Borno.
Tinubu urged Nigerians to cooperate with security agencies by sharing intelligence. “Our forces cannot succeed without the support of the people. Community leaders must play their part,” he said.
Calls for the President’s Resignation Mounting
Amid the worsening insecurities and emboldened attacks even against Nigeria’s military, there are beginning to be voices demanding the president either stand up to the terrorists or resign.
Human rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, lamented that the daily murder of Nigerians is beyond depressing.
He criticised security agencies for their perceived negligence, warning that the country was descending into anarchy due to the government’s inaction.
He called on President Tinubu to take decisive steps to address the worsening insecurity or resign from office.
He said, “The daily killings of Nigerians is beyond depressing. Most recently, the gunmen attack at Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, Kwara State, killing at least two people, injuring many and abducting others. An attack on a place of worship is an indication of the terrifying reality that no one is safe in this country.
“The fact that this particular attack occurred very close to a police station shows government inaction and unwillingness to protect its citizens.
“President Tinubu must take decisive actions on insecurity or resign.”
And rapper, singer and lawyer, Falz Falana, is not even giving the president the benefit of further action.
“Fresh kidnap attacks on a school in Kebbi State and multiple lives lost in a church in Kwara State. It’s ridiculous at this point. This is a war zone. We have an incompetent president and he must resign“.
“President Tinubu should tender his resignation and apologize to the country. As Commander-In-Chief, he is weak, clueless and grossly incompetent. The killings and bloodbath can’t continue. RESIGN NOW, TINUBU“.
He also touted the president over his 2014 tweet while he was still in opposition demanding the resignation of then President Goodluck Jonathan over the same state of insurgency.
But some argue the president has given the requisite marching orders to his army generals, and that with time they could flush out the Jihadist.
Other’s still openly calling for the intervention of President Donald Trump of the United States who had threatened to deploy US forces to stop the killings on the Christian population in Nigeria.
