Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has dismissed widespread rumors claiming that former Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, had died in a London hospital.
Soludo confirmed on Thursday evening that his predecessor Obiano is “alive and well,” describing the reports as malicious and irresponsible.
The clarification followed a surge of online speculation that circulated across social media and some news platforms earlier in the day.
Once the state government issued its official statement, we immediately took down the earlier incorrect report and regret any distress caused by the misleading publication.
Governor Soludo said he had personally spoken to Obiano and condemned the rumour as an example of reckless misinformation that undermines public trust.
He urged media practitioners—especially online publishers—to uphold journalistic ethics by verifying sensitive information before publication.
In a statement signed by his Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, the Governor advised the public to disregard the claims entirely, assuring them that the former governor remains in good health.
Moments earlier before the governor’s clarification, a post from Chief Willie Obiano’s Facebook page directly addressed the rumor, reassuring Ndi Anambra and well-wishers that he was in excellent health:
“I am alive, hale, hearty, and in excellent health. By the special grace of God, I am doing very well,” he wrote.

Obiano described the rumor as unfortunate and thanked everyone who reached out to him during the day. “Your love and goodwill mean more than words can express. Please disregard the rumor entirely,” he added.
The former governor, who led Anambra State from 2014 to 2022, said he remains grateful and guided by God’s grace as he continues with his private life.
Both statements from Soludo and Obiano have now put to rest the earlier false report, reassuring the public that the former governor is safe, healthy, and very much alive.
Since his exit from office, Obiano has led a quiet private life mostly overseas. His time as governor was marked by major infrastructure landmarks like the Chinua Achebe International Airport, Umueri, and a period of relative industrial peace.
