The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has advised former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to abandon any ambitions for the 2027 presidential election, insisting that his political influence has โcompletely collapsed.โ
The party made the remarks on Sunday while reacting to Obiโs failure to deliver his polling unit for the Labour Party in the just-concluded Anambra governorship election.
APC spokesperson in Lagos, Seye Oladejo, questioned Obiโs credibility as a national contender, wondering how he hopes to lead Nigeria when he โcannot command loyalty in his own neighbourhood.โ
Oladejo said the defeat was proof that the political momentum Obi rode on during the 2023 elections had fizzled out.
โA man who cannot win his polling unit has no business dreaming of winning a country. A man who is rejected on his street cannot claim nationwide acceptance. A man whose strongest base has crumbled cannot sell the lie of a national movement,โ he stated.
โWe Hope He Wonโt Run Abroad to Beg Againโ โ APC
The party accused Obi of seeking foreign sympathy after local failures. โWe sincerely hope Mr. Obi will not run to beg for foreign intervention to rescue him from this political free fall, as he has unashamedly attempted in recent times,โ the statement read.
โNigeriaโs democracy is not a toy for desperate politicians seeking sympathy abroad after being rejected at home.โ
Oladejo contrasted Obi with President Bola Tinubu, saying the President was โrebuilding institutions, fixing the economy, expanding infrastructure, attracting foreign investments, and restoring global confidence,โ while Obi was โbusy granting contradictory interviews and hiding behind hashtags that collapse at the ballot box.โ
He further postulated that Nigerians would not entrust their future to a man who he claimed, lacked the trust of his own people.
โIf Peter Obi cannot command trust in his polling unit, he should forget 2027. Nigerians will not hand over their destiny to a man whose own people have loudly withdrawn their confidence,โ Oladejo said.
According to him, the APCโs victory in Obiโs polling unit was โsymbolic, conclusive, and prophetic,โ reflecting โthe national mood.โ He added, โPerformance is triumphing over propaganda; structure is defeating chaos; delivery is destroying deception.โ
Oladejo advised Obi to address issues within his political base before presenting himself as a national reformer. โPeter Obi should spare the nation further melodrama. Let him first repair the political damage at his doorstep before pretending he can repair Nigeria,โ he added.
However, Oladejo forgot to mention that Obi defeated President Tinubu in Lagos State in the 2023 presidential election with a wide margin, where the president governed for eight years, and was considered its de facto political godfather.
These hardball politicking come as parties begin early positioning ahead of the 2027 general election in which Obi is expected to square off again against the president.
