The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 13 new degree programmes across Nigerian universities as part of its effort to reform higher education and equip students with modern, globally relevant skills.
In a Thursday statement, the Commission said the new additions falls under its new Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) framework, which seeks to align Nigerian university education with 21st-century realities in science, technology, and sustainable development.
“The National Universities Commission has approved 13 new degree programmes to modernise Nigerian higher education and align it with global standards,” the statement read.
It added that the programmes will commence immediately after universities complete resource verification, the final step required to confirm institutional readiness.

The approved programmes include:
- Artificial Intelligence
- Nuclear Engineering
- Nuclear Science
- Geomatics Engineering
- Telecommunication Science
- Community Health Science
- Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)
- Intelligence & Security Studies
- Human Kinetics (Sport Management)
- Islamic Economics & Finance
- Parasitology & Entomology
- Cooperative Economics & Management
- Christian Education
According to the NUC, the inclusion of courses such as Artificial Intelligence, Nuclear Science, and Islamic Economics is designed to strengthen national competitiveness and encourage interdisciplinary learning across science, technology, and social studies.
Education analysts say the new policy could reshape Nigeria’s university system if properly implemented.
This is similar to the curriculum modernization efforts in other countries like India, Malaysia, and South Africa, where emerging fields are being introduced to close gaps in innovation and labour market demand.
Meanwhile, the Commission also approved the establishment of the University of Innovation, Science and Technology in Imo State, a major milestone in the state’s educational development.
With this addition, Imo now has eight federal and state-owned universities, contributing to the national tally of 70 state universities across Nigeria.
