Human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, has alleged that the administration of President Bola Tinubu has reached a “high-level secret pact” with the judiciary to ensure that detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, is either sentenced to death or life imprisonment.
In a post shared on Wednesday, Sowore claimed that the Federal Government had already decided Kanu’s fate, adding that the ongoing court proceedings were only “a formality to legitimize a predetermined outcome.”
“It has become clear that a secret decision has long been reached within the Tinubu regime regarding the fate of Nnamdi Kanu,” he wrote.
“The plan, devised through a high-level political conspiracy, is to either sentence him to death or condemn him to life imprisonment. This outcome, predetermined far in advance, is now being dressed up in the guise of judicial procedure.”
Echoes of 1995: A Haunting Parallel
Sowore warned that the current trial could mirror the 1995 execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni activists under General Sani Abacha’s military regime. He described the situation as “a haunting historical echo” of state repression.
“Only the year has changed — this is 2025, not 1995 — but the machinery of repression grinds on,” Sowore said. “The trial of Nnamdi Kanu has ceased to be about justice; it is now a test of conscience for the Nigerian state and its citizens alike.”
He further alleged that Justice James Omotosho, who is presiding over Kanu’s case at the Federal High Court in Abuja, could interpret Kanu’s refusal to open his defense as an admission of guilt — a situation that, according to him, would “conveniently justify a verdict already agreed upon behind closed doors.”
Court Adjourns Case to November 7
Justice Omotosho had earlier granted Kanu, who is representing himself, a final opportunity to open his defense after he repeatedly refused to do so, arguing that the terrorism charge against him was invalid because it was based on “a repealed and non-existent law.”
The court adjourned the matter to November 7, warning that failure by Kanu to proceed with his defense could lead to the forfeiture of his right to do so.
Kanu, who has been in detention since 2021, insists that his trial lacks legal foundation and maintains that he should be released immediately.
