Lagos Opens Coastal Road After Gas Tanker Accident Near Victoria Island

The Federal Ministry of Works has temporarily opened the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road to traffic following a gas-laden tanker accident that blocked the main carriageway at Chisco, inward Victoria Island.

The approval was confirmed in a statement shared on X by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Monday.

The statement, signed by Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, explained that the decision was a safety measure to ease congestion while emergency responders clear the scene.

ā€œThe Lagos State Ministry of Transportation wishes to inform motorists that due to a truck accident at Chisco area, Lekki, the Federal Ministry of Works has approved the opening of the Coastal Road for use pending when normalcy is restored. Motorists are implored to be patient while plying the area,ā€ the statement read.

Swift Response Averts Major Disaster

The accident involved a white Howo tanker truck fully loaded with compressed natural gas (CNG) cylinders, which reportedly lost control and overturned on the busy expressway.

Preliminary investigations suggest the driver may have been speeding before the vehicle skidded, spilling its heavy cargo across the road. Given the highly flammable nature of the gas, the incident triggered panic among road users and residents of the Lekki–Victoria Island corridor.

LASTMA officers arrived swiftly and secured the area, while the police, fire service, and other emergency units joined to cordon off the site and prevent gas leaks or explosions.

Eyewitnesses said the response helped avert what could have been a ā€œmajor disaster on a Monday morning.ā€

Traffic officials have since advised motorists to use the Coastal Road and other approved diversions until the affected section of the carriageway is declared safe.
