The Federal Ministry of Education (FME) has officially commenced payments under the Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund (TISSF), a flagship initiative of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Launched in August 2025 following a stakeholders’ session in July, the fund aims to strengthen staff welfare, institutional productivity, and innovation across Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
Over 9,000 staff members have received disbursements in the first year, representing 28% of the 33,000 verified applicants from 219 federal and state tertiary institutions.
The Ministry reported that beneficiaries comprise a 30:70 ratio of academic to non-academic staff, highlighting a commitment to inclusive support.
Speaking on the milestone, Education Minister Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa said: “The President is delivering for our tertiary institutions — for welfare, for productivity, and for the future. Within just four months, payments have started going out. This is a President that delivers, and the Ministry of Education is profoundly grateful for his continuous support and commitment to staff welfare.”
TISSF forms a key part of the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI) framework, designed to boost morale, welfare, and institutional performance while reinforcing centres of excellence, innovation, and knowledge creation.
The initiative provides concessionary zero-interest loans and welfare support packages, offering staff up to ₦10 million each to address challenges in housing, healthcare, mobility, education, and small business development.
“This Fund is not merely about disbursement; it is about restoring dignity, rewarding dedication, and rebuilding the foundation of our knowledge economy,” Dr. Alausa said.
The Ministry affirmed its commitment to transparent fund management, quarterly financial reporting, and continuous engagement with participating institutions to ensure effective use and repayment, enabling broader access for tertiary institution staff in future cycles.
