Widow Rescued from Barbaric Ritual in Imo State

In a shocking case that has drawn national outrage, a widow in Imo State, Mrs. Chika Ndubuisi, was rescued from being forced to drink the water used to bathe her late husbandโ€™s corpse โ€” a ritual her husbandโ€™s kinsmen allegedly demanded to prove her innocence over his death.

The incident occurred in Awo-Omamma, Oru East Local Government Area, and was halted following the swift intervention of the Imo State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu, the local council chairman, and security agencies.

According to reports, the act was foiled after a womenโ€™s advocacy group raised an alarm that led to the state governmentโ€™s involvement.

โ€œNormalcy has been restored, and a detailed investigation is underway. The widow and her children are under government protection,โ€ Lady Ugwu said.

โ€œBarbaric, Cruel, and Unacceptableโ€ โ€” Government Reacts

The Commissioner condemned the act, describing it as โ€œbarbaric, cruel, and completely unacceptable in a civilised society.โ€

She expressed disbelief that such dehumanising widowhood rituals still persist in modern Nigeria.

Lady Ugwu confirmed that the rescue was coordinated by the Ministry of Women Affairs, in collaboration with the local council and Non-Governmental Organisations, and that some arrests have already been made.

Meanwhile, Imo First Lady, Chioma Uzodinma, has ordered a comprehensive investigation to ensure that that responsible face prosecution.

Mrs. Ndubuisi had been reportedly detained with her husbandโ€™s corpse after being accused by his relatives of causing his death. She was rescued just before being compelled to drink the ritual water.

What’s your take on this story? If the objective behind this ritual is to determine if the deceased’s death was a mariticide, are there no modern ways accomplish that?
