United States President Donald Trump has dismissed the idea of seeking a third term, admitting that the American Constitution makes it impossible for him to remain in power beyond two terms.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Wednesday, October 29, as he flew from Japan to South Korea, Trump said he would have loved to continue serving but accepted the legal reality.
“If you read it, it’s pretty clear. I’m not allowed to run. It’s too bad,” he said.
His remarks came just a day after House Speaker Mike Johnson affirmed that extending Trump’s tenure would be unconstitutional. “I don’t see the path for that,” Johnson said at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday, noting that he had personally discussed the matter with the president.
The Limits of Power
Johnson explained that the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution prohibits any president from serving more than two terms — a rule so deeply rooted that changing it would take years of congressional approval and state ratification.
“He and I have talked about the constrictions of the Constitution,” Johnson added. “But we’re not taking our foot off the gas pedal. We’re going to deliver for the American people — he’ll have four strong years.”
Though Trump acknowledged the restriction, the idea of him staying longer has continued to swirl within his circle. “Trump 2028” hats have reportedly been distributed as souvenirs at the White House, while his former campaign chief, Stephen Bannon, has floated the idea of a third term on his podcast.
On Monday, Trump hinted again that he would have gladly continued if allowed. “I would love to do it,” he said, adding that his party had strong figures for the next election, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance.
“All I can tell you is that we have a great group of people,” he said with a smile.
