Edo PDP: Obaseki Not on the Run, Only Giving Gov. Okpebholo Space

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has dismissed rumours that former Governor Godwin Obaseki is on the run, insisting he remains a free man.

According to the party, Obaseki’s presence in the state would only make the current administration under Governor Monday Okpebholo “very uncomfortable.”

Former Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, said the former governor is currently on a fellowship programme at a university in the United Kingdom, not hiding from any authority.

“Obaseki is not on the run from anywhere. He is on a fellowship in the UK. His presence in Edo will make the present governor uncomfortable. He is not contesting any election; he has served his eight years,” Nehikhare stated.

He added that the former governor would willingly appear before any panel or the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) if invited.

Nehikhare criticised the Okpebholo administration for claiming that Obaseki did nothing while in office, describing the accusation as “laughable.”

He said Obaseki’s administration constructed over 1,300 kilometres of roads and established lasting institutions across Edo’s 18 local government areas.

“The problem they have with Obaseki is what we call the ‘Obaseki Derailment Syndrome’. They act like the opposition while the PDP is in government,” he said.

He urged Okpebholo to “focus on his own administration instead of constantly going back to the past.”

PDP Publicity Secretary, Dan Osa-Ogbegie, also took a swipe at the government’s ongoing projects, arguing that the new flyover being constructed by Governor Okpebholo would have “no real economic impact on the people.”

The party maintained that it would have benefited politically from a weak APC-led government but refused to wish failure on the state, saying that doing so “would demean the people of Edo.”
