A two-storey building collapsed in the early hours of Monday at No. 54, Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop in Oyingbo, Lagos State, leaving several residents trapped under the debris.
According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS), the distress call came in at about 12:20 a.m., prompting a swift response from the Sari Iganmu Fire Station team, which arrived at the scene nine minutes later to begin rescue efforts.
The Controller General of LSFRS, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed that fifteen persons had been rescued so far — seven adult males, four adult females, and four children — all sustaining varying degrees of injuries.
“They have been taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Metta, and General Hospital, Odan, for treatment,” she said.
Marked as Distressed, Yet Occupied
Preliminary investigations revealed that the building had earlier been marked as distressed but remained occupied. Adeseye said the collapse occurred while most residents were still asleep.
Rescue teams from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Red Cross, and other responders joined the operation, which continued through the morning amid fears that more victims could still be buried under the rubble.
“Our officers are working tirelessly with other agencies to locate everyone trapped,” Adeseye assured.
The tragedy adds to a worrying pattern of building collapses across Lagos. Only last month, a three-storey structure under construction in Alagomeji, Yaba, also crumbled, raising renewed questions about regulatory enforcement and public safety.
