Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is reportedly weighing the option of forming a grand alliance with other opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This comes amid a growing wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which has weakened the PDP’s political foothold across several states.
According to another online media – the Sunday PUNCH, top PDP leaders confirmed that quiet talks are underway to build a coalition strong enough to challenge the APC’s dominance.
This signals a departure from the party’s earlier position—when, in April and July 2025, both the PDP Governors’ Forum and the South-West caucus rejected coalition talks and urged internal cohesion instead.
Recent defections appear to have forced a rethink. Delta’s Sheriff Oborevwori, Akwa Ibom’s Umo Eno, Enugu’s Peter Mbah, and Bayelsa’s Douye Diri—all PDP governors—have crossed over to the APC in recent months, along with more than 20 members of the National Assembly.
A senior party official admitted that the defections had drained the PDP’s base, particularly in the South-East and South-South.
“Defections have weakened our base. To remain relevant, we may need a strategic alliance with credible opposition parties,” the online media reported its source said.
Talks Gain Momentum as Party Faces Identity Crisis
South-West PDP Chairman Kamorudeen Ajisafe urged opposition unity, calling for “concerted democratic efforts” to unseat the APC, though he downplayed the defections’ impact.
“If elections are credible, the defections won’t matter much. Nigerians are tired of the APC,” he said.
Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor, while describing the defections as “shameful,” confirmed that high-level talks were ongoing with other parties.
“We’re open to collaboration with any credible platform committed to ending President Tinubu’s government in 2027,” he added.
But the APC quickly dismissed the notion. National Secretary Ajibola Basiru told journalists that the PDP’s plan was dead on arrival.
“The PDP can’t even organise itself, let alone a coalition. We’re focused on delivering the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.
