Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a dramatic political shift in Nigeria’s Southeast.
The governor made the announcement during a state-wide broadcast on Tuesday, explaining that the decision followed deep reflection and was driven by a desire to “connect Enugu State more closely to the central government.”
Mbah said the move was necessary to align the state with the “vision of development and progress” embodied by the APC. He described it as a difficult but necessary choice for the growth of Enugu.
“Leadership demands difficult, even painful decisions, in the service of higher principles and goals. After long reflection, we have made a decision to join the All Progressives Congress,” he declared.
He thanked the PDP for offering him a platform during the 2023 elections, noting that the party had “supported us through a demanding campaign and joined us in celebrating victory.” But, he said, the time had come to make “a bold choice to determine our destiny.”
Enugu’s Political Realignment
The defection was confirmed at an extended cabinet meeting at the Government House, Enugu, where Mbah and his appointees officially switched allegiance to the APC. The move reportedly included House of Assembly members, council chairmen, and local government councillors.
Mbah also commended President Bola Tinubu’s policies, describing his administration as one that has “shown unprecedented support to Enugu State.”
Videos shared by the governor’s media aide, Dan Nwomeh, captured the moment officials waved APC flags and chanted “Tomorrow is here; it is APC all the way; it is Jagaban all the way.”
With this defection, the APC now controls three of the five Southeast states—Imo, Ebonyi, and Enugu—while the Labour Party and APGA retain one each. The PDP, once dominant in the region, now holds none.
Broom Sellers Record Massive Profits
In a twist of irony, traders in Enugu are witnessing a sudden boom in broom sales—the official symbol of the APC.
A visit to major markets revealed that broom prices have surged as defecting PDP members and APC supporters scramble to stock up for rallies and celebrations.
At Kenyatta Market, Mrs Ifeoma Obigeri said her new and old stock sold out within hours. “Peter Mbah’s defection has blessed broom sellers. My stock finished this morning when PDP members came to clear everything,” she said.
Another trader, Obinna Maduagwu, told reporters that the defection had transformed his business. “Since the rumour started, we’ve been making serious money. Many people have joined the business, and all of us are enjoying it,” he said.
At Artisan Market, Mrs Grace Okeke expressed excitement over the sales rush. “As I speak, I don’t have a single broom left. The APC people came to clear everything for tomorrow’s event,” she said.
Some traders joked that more defections should happen often to keep business lively. “If this kind of political event happens every week, we’ll be rich,” one young vendor remarked with laughter.
