Dangote Cement has expanded its continental footprint with the inauguration of a new ₣100 billion cement plant in Attingué, Côte d’Ivoire — about 30 kilometres from Abidjan.
The project marks another milestone for the Nigerian industrial giant, founded by billionaire Aliko Dangote, in its quest to drive Africa’s self-sufficiency in cement production.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abidjan, the Managing Director of Dangote Cement Côte d’Ivoire, Serge Gbotta, called the plant “a major investment in the country’s industrial future.”
Built on a 50-hectare site, the facility boasts an annual production capacity of three million metric tonnes — making it one of Dangote’s largest outside Nigeria.
A Symbol of Confidence in Côte d’Ivoire’s Future
Gbotta described the project as a strong vote of confidence in Côte d’Ivoire’s economic direction.
“This plant is more than an industrial facility — it’s a symbol of confidence in Côte d’Ivoire’s future,” he said. “We aim to supply Ivorians with world-class cement produced locally and sold at competitive prices.”
The Attingué facility makes Côte d’Ivoire the 11th African country hosting a Dangote Cement plant, contributing to the company’s total output of 55 million tonnes annually.
It is expected to create over 1,000 direct and indirect jobs, stimulating youth employment and supporting small local businesses — from transporters and retailers to equipment suppliers.
Dangote Cement also plans to train young engineers and technicians through the Dangote Academy to build local expertise in industrial operations and plant management.
Empowering Builders and Strengthening the Value Chain
Commercial Director Stéphane Tchimou said the new plant would help stabilise cement supply and strengthen Côte d’Ivoire’s construction industry.
“High-quality, reliable cement is vital for builders, contractors, and artisans,” he noted. “Our distribution network will ensure our products reach every region efficiently.”
Tchimou added that Dangote Cement intends to introduce credit facilities and support schemes for small retailers — an initiative designed to deepen the cement value chain and enhance local entrepreneurship.
Beyond industrial production, the company pledged to continue its social investment programmes in Attingué and surrounding communities.
These include road rehabilitation, access to clean water, and support for local healthcare facilities, in partnership with government agencies and development NGOs.
A Vision for Shared African Growth
Reiterating his long-term vision, Aliko Dangote said the project reflects the group’s broader mission to transform Africa through manufacturing.
“Africa is rich with opportunities,” he declared. “Our mission is to tell a new story — one of innovation, production, and shared progress for generations to come.”
The Attingué plant will produce premium cement in three grades — CPJ 32.5R for masonry, CPJ 42.5N for construction, and CPA 52.5 for large-scale infrastructure.
The facility’s advanced technology is expected to cut imports, boost local production, and position Côte d’Ivoire as a key hub for cement exports across West Africa.
