Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has delivered a scathing midterm review of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of failed policies, misinformation, and eroding Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement on Sunday to mark Tinubu’s second year in office, Afenifere said the much-touted Renewed Hope agenda had turned into “a nightmare of deepening hopelessness and despair.”
The statement was jointly signed by the group’s Leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, and its National Publicity Secretary, Justice Faloye. It said every key human development and socio-political indicator had worsened since Tinubu assumed power.
“The midterm report shows that every human development and sociopolitical index has regressed since President Bola Tinubu came to power, turning his promise of renewed hope into a nightmare of deepening hopelessness and despair,” the group declared.
Afenifere said the administration’s policies had worsened hardship across the country but that it had refused to take responsibility. Instead, the group said, the government had chosen to “engage in massive propaganda, claim false successes, and shift blame to global and historical factors.”
It criticized what it described as “unforced economic errors”—the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira without proper safeguards. The group mocked the economic reforms as “Tinubu Economic Deforms.”
According to Afenifere, the current system benefits a privileged few while ordinary Nigerians face unbearable inflation and shrinking wages. It noted that only 4.1% of the population in civil service benefited from the 38% wage increase, leaving millions worse off.
The group also accused the government of mishandling the palliative distribution meant to cushion the economic crisis. “Reliance on unproven channels for the distribution of half-hearted food and other palliatives led to corruption, with benefits cornered by those connected to the corridors of power,” it said.
Extravagant with Broken Promises
Afenifere condemned what it called the government’s extravagance and broken promises to cut governance costs. It said the Oronsaye Report remained unimplemented, while “new cost centres for cronies to exploit” continued to emerge.
“The tone of government at all levels is one of profligate ‘jaiye-jaiye’ lifestyle, while the masses are admonished to endure hardship for the sake of fiscal discipline,” it added.
The group cited luxury spending on a new presidential jet, Cadillac limousines, ₦160 million vehicles for lawmakers, and inflated constituency projects as proof of misplaced priorities.
On governance, Afenifere accused the Tinubu administration of undermining federalism by resisting state police and taking over local government functions.
“The Tinubu administration is destructuring instead of restructuring the country. It is weakening federalism by neutralizing the legislature and judiciary, and pushing Nigeria toward a one-party, totalitarian state,” the group warned.
