Flood Alert: Niger Dams Release Water, NSEMA Wants Communities to Relocate

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has issued a flood alert as four major hydro-electric dams in the state prepare to release excess water.

The dams—Shiroro, Jebba, Kainji, and Zungeru—are discharging large volumes, raising fears of dangerous flooding across riverine communities.

NSEMA Director General, Alhaji Abdullahi Baba Arah, warned: “The dams are releasing thousands of gallons of water per minute that could lead to the overflow of these rivers.”

Communities along Rivers Niger and Kaduna are being urged to relocate upstream for safety. “People living at riverine areas should relocate to safer grounds already identified,” Arah said.

He also urged residents to limit activities around riverbanks during this peak rainy season.

The Nigerian Hydrological Services has reinforced this advice, while NiMet forecasts violent windstorms at the end of the season. “People should avoid standing under trees during rainfall and also stay away from substandard structures,” Arah added.

Several local government areas, including Lavun, Rafi, Kontagora, Mokwa, Lapai, Bida, and Shiroro, are already experiencing washed-away homes, bridges, and farmlands.

Lives have also been lost, though the agency did not give numbers. The flooding has left many residents homeless and crippled farming and business activities.
