Maryanne Moghalu, the wife of the former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and a 2019 presidential candidate, Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, has marked her birthday with a revelation of health struggles.
In a social media post on Sunday, September 28, She wrote: “It’s my birthday today. I’m truly full of gratitude to God. It’s hard to believe that 2 yrs ago, I was quietly fighting for my life, having been diagnosed with 2 stage 3 cancers!! Breast and Colon!! What God cannot do really doesn’t exist. To Him alone be all the glory and honor.”
Mrs Moghalu has been noticeably absent in the social space where she often makes her interventions in topical political and social issues of the day.
Her words resonated widely, not only because of her public profile but because cancer has become a painful reality for millions.
In Nigeria, over 120,000 new cancer cases are recorded annually, with breast and cervical cancers topping the list. Many patients do not get diagnosed early, while treatment costs often push families into debt.
Globally, the World Health Organization has warned of rising cancer cases, particularly in developing countries where access to screening and treatment is limited. Survival stories like Maryanne’s are rare reminders of both resilience and privilege in accessing care.
Mrs Moghalu is a trained lawyer, a social entrepreneur, and Executive Director of the Isaac Moghalu Foundation.
She and Kingsley married in December 1994, and they have four children. Her father, Dr. Christopher Ezike, was one of the first doctors from Southeast Nigeria and served as a Permanent Secretary.
