Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State captured global attention in New York with a triple award haul at the 2025 Global Power Forum, held alongside the 80th UN General Assembly session.
He received the African Public Service Excellence Award, the African Governor of the Year Award, and Special Recognition/Commendation from the House of Representatives of the U.S. State of South Carolina.
The South Carolina commendation cited his distinguished career as professor of economics, economic adviser to President Obasanjo, Governor of the Central Bank, and Governor of Anambra. It praised his role in elevating Nigeria’s position as a financial heavyweight on the continent.
The awards ceremony was graced by a host of global leaders, including former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete; Prime Minister Philip Davis of The Bahamas; Dominica’s President Sylvanie Burton; ex-Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar of Trinidad & Tobago; and Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka of DR Congo.
The African Development Bank’s Secretary-General, Prof. Vincent Nmehielle, was also in attendance.
Soludo also addressed the forum as keynote speaker. His topic: “Africa Unleashed: Navigating the Disruptions, Enhancing Opportunities—The Anambra State Example.” He used Anambra’s strides in infrastructure, education, and industrial growth as a case for what states across Africa could achieve.
On social media, Soludo expressed humility: “I am humbled by the recognition,” he said, thanking supporters in Anambra and beyond.
These accolades underscore the growing international recognition of subnational leadership in Africa. They serve as both a platform and a test: can states like Anambra live up to the expectations embedded in such awards?
Mr Soludo is facing a tight re-election battle in November this year.
