Kremlin Fires Back at Trump’s Proposal to EU to Cut Russian Energy Imports

The tension between Washington and Moscow has taken a new turn with US President Donald Trump now urging Europe to stop buying Russian energy and switch to American oil and gas instead.

The proposal didn’t go down well in Moscow, and Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov didn’t mince words.

“Trump has never hidden his intention to secure US economic interests,” he said. “He is a businessman, who wants Europeans to buy small crayfish for five rubles instead of large ones for three.”

Trump made the demand during his speech at the UN General Assembly. He warned that unless Europe complies, he’s “fully prepared to impose a very strong round of powerful tariffs.”

Europe Under Pressure

Trump’s push is already shaking things up. EU leaders are now considering new tariffs on Russian oil, especially targeting Hungary and Slovakia, the last major buyers of Russian crude.

Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, stood firm. “We can’t ensure the safe supply for our country without Russian oil or gas sources,” he said.

But the EU is moving fast. The bloc plans to phase out Russian fossil fuels by 2027. Some officials now want to bring that deadline forward by a year.

Peskov said the shift has “strained the pockets of European taxpayers,” but Russia has found new buyers in China and India.

Moscow calls Trump’s demands “threats,” warning they could destabilize EU energy security and raise costs through middlemen.

The European Commission is also working on sanctions targeting Russian LNG and crypto channels used to bypass restrictions.

Do you think Trump’s pressure will prompt Europe to sever its reliance on cheap and reliable Russian energy supplies sooner than expected?
