One of Rivers State’s most prominent politicians, Prince Tonye Princewill, has been crowned paramount head of Da Ogo Polo in Kalabari Kingdom.
Princewill, a former governorship candidate of the Labour Party, succeeds his late father, King Prof. Theophilus J.T. Princewill, Amachree XI, as the 6th head of the Da Ogo Elebabene group of houses.
His nomination came from a majority of chiefs in the ruling council. Confirming the decision, Chief Akodu Harrison Princewill declared: “We have a new Polodabo. The people have spoken.”
The chieftaincy of Da Ogo Polo carries weight in Kalabari history. The Eleba Bene group of houses has produced four of the kingdom’s seven kings since the reign of King Kariboye-Abbi Benebo Princewill Amachree IV.

Speaking at the event, HRH Alhaji Mujahid Asari Dokubo described the installation as a unifying moment. “Finally, we have leadership the people of Da Ogo can rally around,” he said.
Princewill, a businessman and entrepreneur, told the gathering that leadership meant unity, humility, and service. “Nobody is bigger than the family, including myself,” he warned.
In his acceptance speech, he pledged to prioritise development for his people. “Stability is a key ingredient for development, and our people need development badly,” he said.
Princewill also praised the Regent of Kalabari Kingdom for providing steady guidance. “We have a Regent who is doing a great job. I look forward to learning from him while supporting his administration in whatever way he deems fit,” he added.
He avoided questions about the future, insisting the present task was already daunting. “Unity and legacy are what matter most,” he said.
