Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), working with Aviation Security officers, have arrested a businesswoman, Okolonkwo Ebere Theresa, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
She was caught while trying to board a Qatar Airways flight to Doha on Sunday.
According to NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi, officers recovered two parcels of methamphetamine weighing 1.40 kilograms from her underwear.
“After a thorough search, two big parcels of white crystalline substance that later tested positive to methamphetamine with a gross weight of 1.40 kilograms were recovered from her butt pad underwear,” the statement read.
During interrogation, Ebere admitted she sells used clothes and operates a POS business in Enugu. She confessed she was recruited into the drug trade.
Meth Hidden in Food Items
On Monday 15th September, NDLEA intercepted a consignment of food items at the NAHCO export shed of Lagos airport. The shipment concealed 40 wraps of methamphetamine weighing 2.30 kilograms.
A 59-year-old man, Umelo Ifeanyi Venatus, who presented the cargo bound for Hong Kong, was arrested.
Three days later, another bust uncovered cocaine in seven phone chargers heading to New Zealand. The substance weighed 257 grams.
Massive Seizures Nationwide
The agency also recorded major seizures in Adamawa.
“No fewer than 233,800 pills of tramadol were recovered in three raids,” Babafemi revealed. Two suspects were arrested.
A suspect abandoned 195,600 pills in a Toyota Sienna vehicle in Mayo Belwa. Another, Rita Zira, was caught with 27,900 pills hidden in her bedroom. A third suspect, 22-year-old Halilu Abubakar, was caught at Namtari checkpoint with 10,300 pills.
In Zamfara, officers supported by Community Protection Guards seized 109 bags of cannabis skunk weighing 1,099.4 kilograms. The suspect, Hammed Danladi Aliyu, 40, was arrested while transporting the drugs in a Mitsubishi truck.
In Edo, NDLEA destroyed two cannabis farms covering 4.53 hectares in Owan West. The farms could yield over 11,000 kilograms of skunk. Eleven bags of processed cannabis weighing 148kg were also seized. Three suspects were arrested.
In Yobe, Babangida Usman and Ismail Ibrahim were caught with 14,000 tramadol capsules on the Damaturu-Potiskum road.
In Taraba, a 28-year-old suspect, Anas Hamisu, was nabbed with three sacks of cannabis weighing 25.5 kilograms.
NDLEA Boss Speaks
Chairman of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), hailed the operations.
“The arrests and seizures represent a significant milestone in our effort to dismantle drug trafficking organizations operating in Nigeria and around the world,” he said.
He warned traffickers that the agency will not relent until they are unable to “inflict harm on our communities or misrepresent our country’s image in the global space.”
Marwa commended officers across MMIA, DOGI, Adamawa, Zamfara, Edo, Taraba, and Yobe commands. He urged them to sustain the fight with what he called a “balanced approach” to drug control.
NDLEA had earlier announced the arrest of two Brazil returnees at Lagos airport. A body scan revealed they ingested 116 wraps of heroin and cocaine. They were forced to excrete the drugs under observation.
