The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has described the recent political crisis in Rivers State as “a misstep that should not have happened.”
He warned that the constitutional breach which triggered President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of emergency rule would leave lasting scars on Nigeria’s democracy.
Obi shared his thoughts on his verified X handle on Thursday. He said the restoration of order after six months of disruption was a relief, but also a reminder of how fragile the nation’s institutions remain.
Quoting a popular saying, he wrote: “The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.”
Obi urged Rivers political leaders to draw lessons from the chaos. “A true leader is one who admits their mistakes, is smart enough to learn from them, and is strong enough to correct them,” he added.
The former Anambra State governor congratulated Rivers people for their resilience and commended their endurance despite provocations during the troubled months.
He appealed to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, members of the State Assembly, and political stakeholders to set aside grievances and embrace peace.
Obi closed with optimism: “The real mistake is one where we end up learning nothing. Be assured that a new Nigeria is possible and inevitable.”
