Meta Launches $799 Ray-Ban AI-Powered Smart Glasses

Meta has unveiled its most advanced smart glasses yet, even as its big bet on the metaverse continues to drain billions.

The new Ray-Ban Display glasses come with built-in screens that let wearers check messages, photos and apps without holding a phone. They work with neural bandsโ€”bracelets fitted with sensorsโ€”that allow control through subtle finger movements. The glasses are priced at $799.

โ€œOur aim is to create stylish glasses that provide personal superintelligence and a sense of presence using realistic holograms,โ€ said Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg at the launch. โ€œThese ideas together are what we call the metaverse.โ€

He predicted that AI-powered eyewear will become the โ€œnext major computing platformโ€ and may eventually replace smartphones.

Billions Lost but Meta Holds Its Course

Meta began its metaverse journey in 2021 when it rebranded from Facebook. Since then, it has poured resources into its Reality Labs unit, which posted a loss of $4.5 billion in the last quarter while generating only $370 million in revenue.

Analysts say Meta is chasing a long-term goal. โ€œThere is no realistic chance of smart glasses sales making this division profitable in the short term,โ€ said Leo Gebbie of CCS Insight.

โ€œThis is about breaking free from Apple and Googleโ€™s dominance in smartphones and carving out space in wearables.โ€

Expanding Ray-Ban and Oakley Ranges

Metaโ€™s earlier collaboration with Ray-Ban proved popular, with models that featured cameras, music playback and AI assistants.

Now, the new Ray-Ban Meta line starts at $379 and remains the worldโ€™s best-selling AI eyewear. It offers real-time translation, hands-free recording and digital assistant access.

Ray-Ban’s Next Smart Glasses are equipped with a “super perception” feature – an AI-powered system that can recognise faces and analyse the environment in real time

Oakley Meta Vanguard, priced at $499, targets sports lovers. It comes with an action camera, links to fitness apps, and immersive audio designed for workouts.

According to Grand View Research, the global smart glasses market, worth nearly $2 billion last year, could grow to $8.26 billion annually by 2030.

Meta insists it is only getting started. โ€œAI glasses connect us to real-world superpowers while keeping us present in the moment,โ€ the company said.
